Exploring kinetic sculptures and their artists led me to bump into Anthony Howe and his practice.
Even if I like his work but I an not interested on pieces of kinetic art moved and triggered by the wind, I have been impressed by this quote of him:
“Kinetic sculpture resides at the intersection of artistic inspiration and mechanical complexity. The making of one of my piece relies on creative expression, metal fabrication, and a slow design process in equal parts.”
from the video Kinetic wind sculptures, Tech Insider, available on Youtube at:
His definition sounds really true for my work as well, and help me to confront with other definitions and try to put together a my definition for the work I am doing.
It make me reflect on the choice of the material: because I am start from the concept of the movement, later I find on what kind of material better suit what I want to express. Try to work with a different range of material give me the possibility to know them better and so to know what material would be more appropriate. More important for me at an initial experimental level is to work fast and with a material easy to find and got, in order to make lots of tests.
Another artist I found interesting is Reuben Margolin.
From the video Sculpting waves in wood and time, Ted Talk, available on Youtube at:
I found this this quote really interesting about the concept behind is work:
“[…] This tension between the need to look deeper and the beauty and immediacy of the world, where if you even try to look deeper you’ve already missed what you’re looking for, this tension is what makes the sculptures move. And for me, the path between these two extremes takes the shape of a wave.”
The "immediacy" he talks about triggers in me the fascination I would like my viewers will feel. The moment, the instant when they will activate my kinetic sculptures has not to be only too short, but has to be memorable and give such a surprise and satisfaction that they would like to play it again and again.
Keeping browsing between videos about kinetic arts, from the video Ultimate Kinetic Art Compilation available at:
I could admire the Jennifer Towley works, more related to mines because of the shapes and the use of mechanical system for the sculptures. These are Lift, Cubes and Squares.
From her websites ( http://www.jennifertownley.com ) then I quote how her works are defined:
“The works derive from her fascination for mechanics and the way the human brain responds to repetitive movements and patterns. “
In the end, a classmates found and send me a video of an impressive piece of kinetic art: it is called Liquid Shard, by Patrick Shearn. Co-Founder of Poetic Kinetics, in L.A.
His work mimics nature in a representative way, but what I took in consideration is the setting of it. I should consider more prospects where to exhibit my works, not only galleries or medium size. I can dare building something big, to involve more viewer at the same times for example.
