Magicians have a technique for performing their magic tricks. It is really helpful to know and practice them for public speaking or for reflecting on what happen in our project. By the way, I use trick too to trigger my kinetic sculpture and hide them, to let the audience to be surprised by what they watch and not knowing how that is possible because they can not see the mechanism.
He started telling us what are the component in the trick and the influences that they have each other, reflecting particularly about our projects.
They with this diagram he clarify what actually happened during it:
About the point 1, it has to become automatic, exercising in order to do it without thinking so that we will flowing guide the attention of the audience.
For the point 2, practice is essential: if you want someone to look at something, you look at that thing; if you want someone to look at you, you look at them/him/her. Look the object and hold it higher or down(for less attention) and do it naturally.
At the point 3, freedom is allow: we can make up our story.
Really important is the point 4: it is the moment of the magic! It is necessary to rise attention and then release once the trick is happened and a countdown can help to prepare the scene.
Where does the magic happen then?
Reflection on our work, what is the narrative? the sequence the have led to the outcome?
Basically, there are just two tricks: appear and disappear. So, what does we show at our show and what we hide?
A trick is made for entertainment, as my kinetic sculptures, in fact this seminar helped me to reflect about what attractive the attention on and what to hide and why. I usually hide the mechanism that make my sculptures work because I want to surprise the audience but it would help to involve them more with my project if I make them trying that in a separated moment and place. In this way I deliver another type of important information.
