When I came to London five years ago, I confront the way I used to express myself and how English people talk. It is not only a matter of different and new worlds, but how they express a concept, the point of view and how they understand what other said to them. Some expressions have a meaning in a language, but does not make sense if translate word for word in another. Due to a new and alternative way to express myself, I started to change also the way I think, as it called in the video Maiko show us, I changed mindset (How language shapes the way we think on TED).
During the develop of my practice at the MA, I have improved my mindset in order to approach a project: I build a methodology even before I knew I was doing it. All the issue I had to understand the context, kept me researching references of other object related to it. Also the solving part pushed me to see how others suggested various responses. As I study Arduino, an electronic platform who links the physical world with the virtual world of the software and the coding, I could say I learned another language that is how to communicate to Arduino what I want it to do and what I want from it, such as the responses of the sensors. It has got an own syntax and commands grouped for functions. Some fixed words and other to choose in order to get different actions.
I learned how to better communicate to other technician, in order to explain my issues and how to get possible solutions to solve it.
I definitely change my Industrial designer mindset to an interactive designer who make artwork. I wouldn't say artist yet because I feel I still in transition in a place where I solve technical problem with my first background. To prove it I can bring as evidence my kinetic sculpture, the systems I worked on both mechanic and electronic, elements that before I couldn't understand them without the knowledge I develop in this two years.
