Interaction happens through contact (physical - visual), gestures, and participation. That is why I wonder for long time before if I was doing something wrong, because of my background as an industrial design which keep suggested me there isn't a utility in my work. It was because I was focus on the interaction aspect of my subjects, not on the function, and I wanted to develop that. The fact that the creative act needed the contribution of the audience it wasn't really clear to me, but I need to discover it making my kinetic sculpture, as every different type of them work in a particular way.
When we talked about the material, I felt ashamed because I had problems to answer to people at the question: "What material do you work with?"
I can't answer to that because my practice doesn0t start with the choose of the material, but is the material that is been choose in base of the what I need to make work with that. For example, I don't work with metal but I used aluminum tubes for one of my kinetic sculptures because ti was suitable for the working of it, as it is light, empty inside but still hard. In fact it has been said that we don't think about the media or the material, but we think about the behaviors.
There was a diagram about a way to categorise interaction:
Participatory | Control | Interactive / Collaborative
Performative | Immersione | Connected / Distributed
Generative | Interface | Computable / Variable
| Narrative |
| Play |
Thinking about my work, I would pick participatory because my sculptures need the presence of the audience, generative because the "create" a change in their initial status and create an emotion in the viewer.
I then choose control, immersion as I have been thinking about add music, spot lights or setting them in a big room, slightly narrative because the change of how present themselves create a story about them and definitely play because is the behave the audience should get once it figure out how they work.
About the last column I would opt for interactive / collaborative because my work has an important part of interaction as it trigger it.
Through the examples shown be Jonathan, different type of interactive works have a model behavior, that means a way to give instruction: a person interact and the others copy him/her, so not always written instruction are needed. Others types just make the people play with it, they don't generate anything and it is still alright. Some others have familiar elements that suggested to use them and so how interact. An installation with three swings generate happy memories and switch behavior making the adult wait their turn in line, which highlighted how simple could be letting something natural happened. All these make me stronger and confident about keeping working and exploring my way to develop kinetic sculpture and investigate movements with the interaction.
