Writer's picture: Maria Laura BassiMaria Laura Bassi

To test if the percentage of the clay and coffee are fine, it was necessary made a column to check the procedure and to be sure to know how to make it in the proper way once we will be in the Tate Exchange space setting everything.

First of all the right percentage of coffee and clay mix has to be keep wet and then pressed every few thin layers in a big mould.

After the mould had been removed, we tested how crumble it resulted the column. In this way we try to adjust the percentage of components and check if support the weight of the coffee cubes.

About their stands, we use the rods we got to give hight and stability to the supports where to put the coffee and clay columns. We decided to make them with different heights each, so that everyone could participate actively: children, teenagers, adults.

After the first attempts, it was sadly clear it wasn't enough stable. We guessed that it needed a larger rod in the middle, and so we added it.
