Group crit with Maiko

For the group crit on Wednesday I had worked on building the tensegrity structure of a cube and presented it. It was a good method to study a way as someone else had solve the joints issue in the past.

I follow the instruction on how to assemble it on a video on youtube, TensegriToy: Oktaeder aus 12 Stäben - building a tensegrity model - Faszienmodell

available at:

Watching it I also saw what type of rod I needed to use: rods with a cut in the extremities, where the elastic band passes and that is how I had to make mine.

From another video, How to build a Tensegrity Model - LATTC available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gtvxYZ0GIg I saw the person who explain how to build the tensegrity cube using rubber tips for safety to put at the extremities of the rods.

Other types of objects that use tensegrity structure and different elements to make them are shown in videos like 《Tensegrity Art》 How to make tensegrity structure objects ~12 Structural materials ~ 12本テンセグリティの作り方 available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjZIhqzavi0

I would like my cube to be move, so I tested how it behaves and if it will resist to certain movement. I basically pushed it to the extreme movement it can do.

At the end, one of the elastic band got broken. After few days others elastic bands got broken too so I suppose it was because the ones that I used were too stretched due to the length of the rods.

Next action to be taken about it would be to make wood rods with different lengths, smaller and longer, and the cut where the elastic band pass less wide, to be sure they don't come out.

In addition, I showed the joints issues research I had for the last tutorial with Oscar, in particular the Walking Cube kinetic sculpture by 1024, a creative studio founded in 2007 by Pier Schneider and Francois Wunschel. I quote from their website:

"1024’s immersive installations combine art and architecture, physical constructions and digital tools, giving rise to evolving temporary or perennial experiences."

This studio is what I would like to do in future as is related to my practice I developing during this MA.

In the end, Xinming suggested me a exhibition she went to about an installation made by wires all interconnected as a net, sometimes representing polyhedrons and able to be played creating sounds.

When I saw it I was amazed because it could be a possible developing of my sculptures, but I felt also sad someone else already did something like that, so I needed to move on in another direction.

After all, movement is one of my principal subject.

Next action to be taken will be make more tensegrity cubes and cross my tubular structure with those because I found really interesting what happen in the elastic joints of them. I will try to understand how the Walking Cube is made and work too in order to take the part I could need for my kinetic cubes.
